What supplies did you use to make the earrings?

I work with polymer clay, and designed this earring shape to mimic the look of stretched ears without actually having to go through the process. I keep looking for new ways to make them and different designs to cover them with, and these are my favorites.

It's surprising how many outfits they go with, especially my steampunk inspired things!

What techniques did you use to make the earrings?

I created a rectangular cane that was a Skinner blend of gold and bronze, then made sandwich stripes of black and white. I sliced the rectangular cane lengthwise in equal sections, and layered the stripes between each of the sections. Then I put it all back together and reduced it slightly to get rid of any air pockets, sliced off a thin layer from the face of the cane, and layered it on a polymer clay core, which I then shaped into the earrings.

After baking, I drilled holes for the silicone backs, and attached the ear posts.

Tips and Tricks

  • When rolling out stripes on a core, make sure to roll only a little bit at a time to prevent distorting the stripes
  • use an acrylic brayer to get air pockets out after layering each stripe

What do you think make these earrings so special?

I think these are great because of their color, and especially because of their shape. They're amazing conversation pieces when paired with a black top and pulled back hair!
