By Tammy Powley, About.com

Heat - The torch is used to bring the metal quickly up to a high temperature. The solder will flow towards the heat. Rotate the flame from the torch to heat the metal first. Then the solder will melt easily. There are different torches used for soldering. Some common torches are a torch tip with propane canister, a tip with a mapp gas tank, or an acetylene/air tank.
