Ah, good question!
According to the Paperclay.com web site, this is how they define paper clay: Creative Paperclay is a non-toxic modeling material that can be sculpted, molded or shaped, and air dries (no baking!) to a hard finish that can be carved, or sanded - perfect for artists and crafters of all kinds!
Okay, doesnt really tell you much, does it? Though, some of this makes sense because I found paper clay at my local craft store by a lot of modeling supplies. However, when I read the package of paper clay its ingredients are listed as volcanic ash, talc, water, starch, wood pulp, and preservatives.
Along with the basic paper clay that Ive been using, this company also has a few other similar products called Pearl Paper clay, which they developed for use in schools, and Delight, which they describe as pure white and very soft.
So, there you have it - at least some basic definitions to help explain the materials which make up this unique jewelry and crafting medium.
