How the Idea Came

By Tammy Powley, About.com

3. What gave you the idea for Luxe?

Because I thought it was challenging to make a profit (very different than making a few sales!) selling finished jewelry, I wanted to think of another way, and one that was scalable. So many people were into crafting and /or saving money, I thought; why not make a business out of teaching jewelry making? And, how about putting it into a direct sales model so people have the opportunity to make money by training others to teach jewelry making. That way, people could really profit from their passion, and make money making jewelry!

4. How long did it take for you to create your business model and see it through to a real, viable business?

Years! I knew I wasn't going to promote the idea of being a consultant until I had done it myself and proven that this would really work- that people loved making jewelry at home parties and spend the money to do so. I piloted the concept while I had another job and had our first child. I did parties on weeknights and during the weekend. Sounds exhausting, I know, but the reality is, Luxe Jewels parties were so much fun, they invigorated me! I realized how great it was to go to a fun party and teach stylish jewelry making (plus, in that format, successfully sell a few finished pieces) and earn $100 - $125 a party. Sometimes, I had large parties and earned much more. However, since I was doing it all on my own, it was so much work. I had to create all the instructions, the kits, the pictures, the website, the marketing materials.... It just made me realize what a valuable service Luxe Jewels could provide others. To give people the support they needed with the buying, inventory management, sales tax- the uncreative side of the business! Otherwise, it's just too much!
