Melting Jewelry Making Metal

By Tammy Powley, About.com

First, let me try to explain why you should not use a soldering iron, soldering gun, or cold heat soldering device.

The melting point of sterling is 1640 degrees F or 893 degrees C. Copper is 1981 degrees F or 1083 degrees C. Gold is 1945 degrees F or 1063 degrees C. Most of the soldering guns and irons are used for other work, like soldering electrical wires together, so they just don’t get hot enough, and part of soldering requires that you melt tiny bits of metal onto metal. If you can’t melt the metal, you will not be successful.
