Fire Clay Charm

6. Now set the clay piece on a fire brick, and using a butane torch aimed a few inches away from the clay piece, heat it until it starts to glow, moving the flame around a little as you heat it. If it starts to bubble or looking shiny, pull the torch away. This means you are too close. Once it's glowing orange in color, continue to fire for about 2 minutes. A little longer is okay. You'll see at one point some smoke. This is because the organic material in the clay is burning away.

Remember that the piece will be very hot now, so don't touch it with bare finders! Ouch! Also, make sure you fire in a well-ventilated area.

7. Once the charm is cool (you can use tongs to dip into water to cool it more quickly), use a wire brush to clean it. This will clean off the fire scale from the torch.
