Memory Wire Shears

If you've ever heard the saying "use the right tool for the job," then you'll be happy to also hear about a tool used for cutting memory wire. As many of us know (and some of us have learned the hard way in fact), never, ever, ever cut memory wire with your good wire cutters. Memory wire is an extremely thick coil of tempered steel wire. Therefore, if you use regular wire cutters on it, your wire cutter blade will be permanently damaged. In the past, I've always suggested using heavy-duty wire cutters, and while they work, I still found it hard to get a good, smooth cut on the wire, not to mention having the piece that I cut fly across the room!

Recently, a friend of mine was raving about memory wire shears, so I had to give them a try, and I have to say, "Wow! What a difference!" Not only do you get a great, clean cut on your wire, it really is effortless. Since many jewelry makers eventually have problems with their hands, this is a big plus. And, of course, you won't have to worry about ruining your good cutters.

I got my shears from Beadalon ®, but they are available from just about any vendor that sells beading supplies and tools. I've seen the price vary, but they retail for about $30. If you enjoy working with memory wire, then you should consider investing in a pair of shears. It will save your cutters, and also relieve any hand-strain you've had in the past when cutting memory wire.
