Water Cast Pin with Pearls and Garnets

Tammy Powley
While most jewelry designers think of lost wax method of casting when the idea of casting comes up, not everyone has the equipment for this process. However, there is another much easier casting method called water casting that allows you to make unusual jewelry components using metal scraps. Plus you only need a few pieces of equipment.

To water cast, you’ll need the following:

Scraps of silver
Melting dish with handle
Bucket of water
Stick for stirring
Torch
Safety glasses

Pictured is a piece I glued a pin back to and also glued on some freshwater pearls and garnet beads. As you see, it has a gold look to it because the copper rises to the top.
