Lost Wax Casted Spider

Sterling Silver Spider

Sterling Silver Spider Out of Pickle

Tammy Powley
First, I’ll explain about how I made the silver spider. The spider originally was a ring. So to start, I picked through the bag to make sure I got one of the best looking spiders. Some of them were a little deformed.

Then I had to cut off the ring on the back and trim extra pieces of plastic that were sticking out here and there.

Once I had made sure my spider looked good, I used the lost wax method of casting, but instead of using a wax mold I used the plastic spider.

The technique doesn’t change for plastic, only the safety precautions. Since burning plastic is toxic, during the burn out process, no one should be in the same room as the ovens. This is to make sure that no one inadvertently inhales any of those nasty fumes. Here’s a picture of what my spider looks likes now that I’ve cast it and pickled it. Obviously, it was not finished yet.
