Interweave's Luxury Pearl Book

By , About.com Guide

Interweave Press is already known for its inclination toward luxurious jewelry books, and Create Jewelry: Pearls ($22.95) written by Marlene Blessing and Jamie Hogsett (two editors from Beadwork magazine) is no exception. In fact, its subtitle is "Luxurious Designs to Make and Wear."

This books is divided into three types of pearl jewelry: classic, special occasion, and fashion-forward. So, it tries (and I think succeeds) in having a little something for everyone, not matter what your jewelry taste is like. A few of my own personal favorites include "Sacred Vows Lariat," a multi-strand lariat that includes different shapes and sizes of pearl beads; "Pearl Fusion," another necklace that combines pink pearls with turquoise and an unusual pendant; and "Wild Trellis," a toggle bracelet using loads of side-drilled green pearls dripping from large links of chain.

Scattered among the 20 pearl jewelry projects are tips and factoids about pearls, such as a look back at the famous Breakfast at Tiffany's movie and Audrey Hepburn's pearl necklace and history about pearls and their value in the ancient world.

As a pearl-o-holic myself, I really liked this book. My only criticism might be the lack of technical information about how to construct the jewelry. There is a techniques section in the back of the book, and much like the magazines we are used to in the jewelry industry these days, all the techniques are provided together in one spot. Thus, the projects reference this section. However, for someone totally new to jewelry making, these techniques may be a little too condensed. However, if you have at least some basic stringing knowledge and a little wire experience, this would not be a problem since most of the designs do not require very advanced levels of construction.
