Get Hip and Bead

By Tammy Powley, About.com

Most jewelry makers and beadworkers know that we are hip. Hey, yo-dude, jewelry making is one of the hottest crafts in the hobby industry. The image of the old lady knitting is no longer accurate when it comes to today’s crafter. More and more young people are picking up beading needles and pliers and getting hip beading, so this new book Hip to Bead: 32 Contemporary Projects for Today’s Beader (Interweave Press $19.95) by author and jewelry designer Katie Hacker seems like it has a ready-made audience. However, even your mature jewelry makers (like moi) will find this a fun book to peruse. My personal favorites were the “Y Not? Necklace” and “Fit for a Queen Bracelet.”

The first section of the book starts with the basics including, of course, some information about beads, findings, stringing materials, and tools. Then it’s time to start the projects which are all geared toward updated fashionable looks and unique home ornaments and accessories. It’s nice to see barrettes, purses, and watches added to the mix as well.

Along with projects, there’s lot of other jewelry-related information throughout the book located in handy text boxes such as tips for using chain; connecting beads; project variation suggestions; bead knotting techniques; and choosing the right adhesives.

While even at my age most of the projects in the book appealed to me, it is obviously written for a younger crowd and also for beginner jewelry makers. Teens and young adults would probably really enjoy this book. The projects are trendy and easy to make, most taking just a few hours, and I think this would be a great way to introduce young people to the joys of jewelry making.
