Designing Jewelry with Glass Beads

Interweave Press
Designing Jewelry with Glass Beads ($22.95) written by Stephanie Sersich and published by Interweave Press is all about the glass, as in lampwork, pressed, blown, seed, furnace, and crystal beads. At first glance, I thought this was a lampworking book, but it is really designed for those of us who enjoy using lampwork beads and other types of glass beads in our beaded jewelry designs.

Glass is an amazing material and lends itself to a large variety of beads, and Sersich's approach is to show how you can use all kinds of different types of glass beads with all kinds of different jewelry making techniques and stringing materials. For example, she has projects combining glass beads and wire, glass beads and ribbon, glass beads and waxed linen, and well, you get the idea. Projects include full-color images of the finished pieces along with color illustrations of some of the more involved steps. There is also a brief techniques section in the back of the book covering methods such as crimp beads and wire wrapping.

Along with the how-to part of the book, there is a great deal of information relating to glass beads throughout the book along with highlights of well-known artists such as Dustin Tabor and Anne Lenox. As I mentioned earlier, this book will not teach you necessarily how to actually make the glass beads, but you do get a look into how they are made. She gives brief tutorials on the basics of making lampwork beads and lampwork star fish pendants. There is also a section on design which discusses elements of designing such as balance and repetition. One of the text boxes that really stood out to me while reading through this section quotes Sersich as saying, "Beading is a miniature game of organizing space." I liked that idea a lot.

This is a total immersion into beading with glass, and I think most of the projects can be made by a beginner. None of the methods are overly complicated, though some projects may take a little longer than others to make. I particularly liked how Sersich used more than just beading wire to string her design on, so I think this may be one area that those with more technical knowledge might enjoy as well.
