Tips to Consider

By , About.com Guide

First of all, be honest. If you don’t feel comfortable doing the repair, suggest they go to a professional jeweler. There can be a big difference between soldering a jump ring on a silver necklace and adding a prong to a gold and opal ring.

Examine the piece thoroughly. Often the customer knows what needs to be done, but since you know more about jewelry, you might know of a better way to fix something or even a more aesthetic way.

If you charge for your service, keep track of the time you spend. Sometimes a repair may seem simple, but then it turns into an involved ordeal.

Return the piece so it looks almost new. A professional jeweler polishes all pieces that they fix. This is a very nice touch. It really doesn’t take that much extra time and will make your customer happy.
