Easy Stone Setting

By Tammy Powley, About.com

The first stone I ever set was in a ring I had fabricated from square silver wire. I was taking a class and was instructed to use a jeweler’s file to file the prongs until my stone fit. Let’s just say...this took FOREVER! Today, just about any one can set a stone using a variety of commercially available settings which are already set up to have a stone mounted in them. Though these settings do not provide the same quality created by a professional jeweler who is trained to set stones (most often using a bur and very steady hands), they are an easy answer to the jewelry hobbiest.

Read on to learn more about the different options available for easy stone settings.
