Resource Rediscovery

While browsing in my local book store this week, I rediscovered a valuable artists resource - The Crafts Report, a monthly magazine that provides crafts related business information. For years, I had subscribed to this publication and found the articles on selling crafts very helpful when I was first starting out with my jewelry business. After a few years, I have to admit, I eventually felt like I was reading the same information over and over again (a problem I know seem to be having with some of my bead related subscriptions). But, now this publication has a new look since I last read an issue.
If you are just starting out with your jewelry or craft business, then you will find a wealth of information for the novice business person. However, even if you have been selling your work for awhile, you might want to consider taking a look at this magazine. Besides the usual "How to set up a booth" type of articles, there is information about large shows, profiles of galleries, related news, and they still have their "Crafts Wanted" section. I had forgotten that I had actually sold some work a few years ago just by using the resources in this section!
There is no blue print to follow in order to sell what you make. There are numerous factors such as geographic location, seasonal trends, and travel ability that all work for or against a craft business. Much of it requires trial and error. However, a resource like The Crafts Report might at least save you from making a few of the "error" parts of doing business.
Before trooping down to your local book store, you can preview this magazine, as well as review other resources they provide via the Internet, by visiting their web site.
