Quad-Loopal Component

I’m not against buying pre-made jewelry components to include in my jewelry designs. However, it’s really nice to be able to make your own whenever possible. This is one design I created after doodling with a pen and paper.

You’ll need:

about 6 inches of your choice of wire (22-18 gage if silver)
wire cutters
round nosed pliers
flat/bent nosed pliers
jewelers’ files

1. First, position the thickest part of the nose of your round nosed pliers in the middle of the wire.

2. Bend the wire in half while holding it with the pliers. You’ll now have to ends of the wire to work with.

3. Now use the thickest part of your pliers again to make another loop on one of the wires.

4. Repeat step 3 on the other wire.

5. At this point, you need to decide what you’re plan to do with your component. If you plan to add it to chain, you’ll need to have the chain ready. If you plan to use it another way, say with beading wire and crimp beads or with bead tips, then go ahead and make the next 2 loops.

6. Now use the middle part of your round nosed pliers to make the fourth loop.

7. If you’re going to use chain with your finished piece, then slip the chain on now. Otherwise, skip to the next step.

8. While still keeping the round nose inside the loop, use flat/bent nosed pliers to wrap the excess wire around itself to close up the loop.

9. Repeat steps 6-8 to make the fifth and final loop.

Here's a printer friendly copy of this file.

This design could easily be created on a jig by just positioning five pegs on your jig. There’s about 1 inch distance between the large, middle loop and the second loop created. So, keep this in mind if you plan to use a jig.

This component has an elegant look alone, but it you could also dangle beads from the loops to create a different look or to bring in more color into your design.
