Bead and Wire Vessel Necklace

When you find a beautiful component like this lampwork glass vessel created by D.D. Hess, you don't want to take away from it with too much ornamentation. So, for this piece, I decided to keep it simple in order to showcase this wonderful little piece of art. Along with the vessel, you'll need some chain, wire, toggle clasps, and a few crystal beads to make for yourself.

You'll need:

1 lampwork vessel
approximately 18 inches of sterling chain
2 sterling toggle clasps
two 6-mm peridot-colored bicone crystal beads
eight 2-mm light amethyst-colored bicone crystal beads
two 4-mm dark amethyst-colored bicone crystal beads
approximately 1 foot of 24-gauge round sterling wire

1. Begin by taking a 14-inch piece of chain, insert your wire through one end of the chain, and connect them together using the wrapped loop technique.

2. Slide on one 2-mm bead, one 4-mm bead, and another 2-mm bead.

3. Start another wrapped loop after the beads, but before wrapping the loop closed, slip on the "T" part of one of your toggle clasps.

4. Repeat the above steps, but this time, attach the "O" part of your toggle to the other end of the chain. Then set your chain aside for later.

5. Now take about two inches of chain, and slip it through one of the handles of your vessel (Note: While working with the glass vessel, you may want to put a towel or polishing cloth underneath your work area in case you drop it!)

6. Bring the ends of the chain together, and slip a piece of sterling wire through both ends of the chain, and then connect them together using the wrapped loop technique.

7. Now slip on one 2-mm bead, one 6-mm bead, and another 2-mm bead.

8. Start another wrapped loop after the beads, but before wrapping the loop closed, slip on the "T" part of one of your toggle clasps.

9. Repeat steps 5 - 8, but this time, attach the "O" part of your toggle to the other end of the chain.

10. Finally, connect your chain to your vessel piece by attaching the two toggle clasps together.

Another cool thing about this design, other than the vessel, is that you can use the chain for other things. You can flip it around so the toggle ends connect behind your neck and wear it as a simple chain or slip a charm onto the chain. You can also make other ornaments to wear in the center, making interchanging component pieces.
