Jetson Earrings

Dateline: 05/24/99

I named these earrings after the Jestson because when I showed them to my husband he said they look like they belong on the Jetsons. Mary Geitgey sent me the instructions for these earrings along with the handy wooden dowel. I met her at a Rock & Gem show while I was admiring theses earrings that she made. They reminded me of the Sterling Silver Coil earrings I made and used as the first feature of this site. But, I couldn’t figure out how she got the middle wire to go through the coil. The secret is in the wooden dowel. She has her husband drill a small whole on top of the dowel and then cut a slit from the center of the whole and down approx ½" on the dowel.

First you’ll need the following:

  • Wooden dowel w/hole (this one is ½" wide and 5" long)
  • round wire (24 or 26 gage works best)
  • beads (I used hematite teardrops and purple Czech crystals)
  • earring hooks
  • wire cutters
  • round nosed pliers
  • Next, you need to cut your wire. I used 24 gage gold-filled approx. 9 inches long.

Then insert about 2 inches of the wire into the hole in the dowel and bend the rest of the wire so it is in line with the slit.

Wrap the rest of the wire around the dowel and then pull it off.

Now, use round nosed pliers to curl the coiled end of the wire (if necessary you may want to file this a little first). Slip on your choice of beads onto the straight part of the wire, and then curl the end of the straight wire using round nosed pliers. Add ear hooks, and you’re finished. Simple and elegant. There are numerous ways to change this design a little. You can have a narrower diameter dowel, a larger or smaller whole, or use square wire. All graphics created by Tammy Powley.
