Prom Queen Adjustable Necklace

My prom customer had a hard time deciding what type of necklace she wanted. Should she wear a Y-necklace? How about a choker style? But, maybe she wants a little longer piece? "Not to worry," I told her, and that's when I decided to make a necklace that was versatile enough for her to wear more than one way.

I did this by using chain, beads, and wire, and then using a hook on one end and triple loop on the other. This way, she could attach the hook into various spots along the length of chain and wear it with the dangling part in front as a Y-necklace,

or she could flip it around so the dangle was going down her back and she had a choker design.

A third way to wear the necklace is to attach the hook to the loop on the end of the chain and wear it longer (about 18 inches).

You'll need:

3 hematite heart beads
19 - 4mm Czech dark purple crystals
7 - 4mm light purple pearls
1 - sterling heart bead (I got this particular bead from Rio Grande.)
16 inches of sterling Figaro chain
approx. 30 inches 24 gauge sterling wire
approx. 6 inches of 20 gauge sterling wire
jeweler's files
round-nosed pliers
flat-nosed pliers
wire cutters

I combined a number of techniques in this piece including the triple loop technique, which I used to finish off the hook as well as and silver heart that dangles in the front when worn as a Y-necklace or back if worn as a choker.

I then used the wire and bead chain technique and wrap looped technique to connect the bead components and wire to the chain. Of course, you could create any combination here, but I alternated as you can see in the picture, so that I had a real mixture. One thing to think about is that you will want to make sure you flip the heart beads back and forth so that they alternate pointing in different directions. That way, the wearer doesn't have to feel like her heart beads are upside down.

I've used this same basic design and different bead and wire combinations a number of times, and it really helps to create a piece you'll never get bored with because you can wear it so many different ways.
