African Stitch Bracelet

I’ve already shown how to use this stitch from South Africa to make an amulet bag necklace. But, this is a very versatile stitch that can be used to make bracelets, necklaces, even belts. I’ve made a few bracelets using this stitch and only made the following changes in order to adapt the design. You will need to follow the directions in the previous articles in order to understand how the stitch actually works.

First, instead of making four ladders with 40 rungs each and connecting them into a circle, you need to make two ladders approx. 74 rungs each (the length depends on how large you want the bracelet). You don’t need to connect these ladders.

Next, work the "V" stitch back and forth between the two ladders just as you would when connecting the four circular ladders. You will go all the way down the two ladders and then all the way back, so there will be a double layer. This was also done in the amulet bag. The only real difference here is that you don’t have ladders that have been connected to form circles. Actually, it’s much easier when the ladders are just two straight pieces.

Once you have the two ladders connected, you need to create a toggle clasp. I opted to include an 8mm stone bead (leopard-skin jasper in this case) to form one end of the clasp. For this end, you just create one piece - basically using the same techniques as the fringe for the bag - and position it in the middle part at one end of the bracelet. For the other end, you position a loop in the middle (again using the same looping technique as described for the bag). The number of beads used will depend on the size of the seed beads and the size of the bead used for the clasp. I usually create my loop loosely and then slip it over the bead part to see if it fits before I secure the loops. I also go through the loop a few times with the thread to make it stronger.

Though one toggle claps is shown on this bracelet, I also made one with two toggles side by side. It looks pretty good. Unfortunately, I sold it before scanning it.

You can follow similar instructions as above to make a necklace. You just need to make your ladders longer. You could even add some fringe to jazz it up.
