Adding Fringe

There are many possibilities when considering fringe. Branch, twisted, straight, circular, and angled are just a few techniques that can be used to adorn an amulet bag. Since I had some nice beads such as pink pearls, crystals, and tear drops in my strap, I also wanted to include those in the fringe. So, I decided to do simple straight fringe and graduate the length of each piece from short to long.

Fringe is often added to amulet bags, and though I tend to be conservative, I have to admit usually more is better when it comes to this adornment. One aspect of this African bag is that fringe can be added in two layers. This is because the bottom of the bag was once a ladder with 40 rungs. Then it was folded in half and connected, remember? I was happy with just one, but you might considering doing two on your bag.

Here are the instructions for simple, straight fringe. You’ll need the same supplies as you used for the body and strap. It’s up to you how you’d like to design your fringe. I made each of my pieces of fringe so that each was different. I started with a very short piece and made each piece a little longer than the previous piece until I had a total of 20 pieces of fringe.

First, weave a new piece of thread so it comes down through the last rung of the latter that is the bottom of your bag, and thread on your choice of beads.

Make sure you have one extra seed bead at the end of your beads. Skip this bead and thread your needle back up through the other beads.

Continue back up through the ladder rung, and pull your thread so the fringe is tight.

Go back down through the next ladder rung and continue added beads in the same manner.

Fringe is an individual choice. I’ve made a total of three of these African bags now and I created different fringe for each one.

This one had circular fringe.

This one included long bugle beads and tapered in the middle.

And here is the latest one.
