Wacky Wire Chop Stick

The next time you are eating Chinese food out, make sure you ask for some of those free, wooden chop sticks they have, but don’t eat with them. Instead, tuck them away so you can use them for this easy wire project.

You’ll need:

1 wooden chop stick
wire cutters
round nosed pliers
assortment of colored wire (I used 20 gauge purple for the primary wire and 26 and 28 gauge purple and pink for the accent wires.)
toothpick
ruler

1. Start by cutting about a foot of your accent wire and wrapping it around a toothpick making sure to leave about 2 inches free.

2. Pull the wire off the toothpick, and continue to make a few more coiled pieces like this. I made two coils of each of my accent colors.

3. Now take the coils and put them together as if in a flower bouquet and twist the 2 inches that are not coiled on each end of the wires together. I was able to do this with my fingers, but you might need some pliers to help you a little.

4. Set the coils aside for later.

5. Now take your primary colored wire and leave it on the spool. I don’t know exactly how much wire you’ll need, so it’s better to keep it on the spool for the next few steps and cut it off when you’re almost finished.

6. Take about 1-2 inches of the colored wire and hold it against the thicker end of your chop stick. For the purpose of demonstration, I used a piece of tape in order to scan in a picture here, but you would use your finger instead of tape.

7. With one hand holding the chop stick and wire against it, use your other hand to start winding the wire around the chop stick.

8. After winding for about an inch or so, get your bouquet of coiled wires and hold them up against the opposite end of the chop stick.

9. Continue to wrap the chop stick making sure to enclose the end of the bouquet.

10. Wrap all the way up to the top so that your coils are sticking out but the end of the bouquet is covered in wire.

11. Once you have reached the top of the chop stick, then start to wrap back down in the opposite direction.

12. When you reach the end, make two loose wraps and cut off your primary wire leaving about 6-10 inches of wire.

13. Insert the end of the wire through the two loose wraps.

14. Use your hand to pull hard on the end of the wire so that the loops tighten.

15. Make a few more wraps.

16. Now trim off more wire but leave a few inches.

17. Use round nosed pliers to make a coil at the end of the wire.

18. Use fingers to push the coil up against the chop stick.

19. Now use your fingers to adjust our colored coils at the top of the chop stick. Move the coils where you want them and bend the coils a little so they are not sticking straight up.

I noticed a few rough spots on my chop sticks, so I plan to use a fine sand paper to smooth them out. You may or may not have to do this depending on the quality of your "free" chop sticks.

I’m sure after making this you’ll come up with a few design ideas of your own. This is a fun look, but you could add beads or even pearls and create a more elegant piece. Then slide it into a bun for your own, unique hair jewelry.
