Long, Long Lariat

The longer the lariat the more options there are for wearing it. With this super long lariat design, you can wear it in a number of ways. However, first you’ll have to make it.

You’ll need:

28 inches of chain
28 inches of 24 gauge wire
2 ½ inches of 18 gauge wire
15 - 5mm pearls
30 - 4mm crystals
1 24 gauge head pin
round nosed pliers
flat/bent nosed pliers
wire cutters
jewelers’ files

Note on materials: I used all sterling findings as well as sterling chain. Though the choice is yours, the chain I used hat one long and three small alternating links. My pearls are a dark gray, oval shape. The crystals are dark amethyst Czech crystals.

1. Use wire cutters and cut up your chain so that you have 14 pieces that are 2 inches in length.

2. Take your head pin, and slip on 1 crystal, 1 pearl, and 1 crystal bead.

3. Use round nosed pliers to bend the wire over into an L shape, and then use your fingers to curl the wire around the nose of your pliers to form a loop.

4. Slip the last link of one of your pieces of chain onto the loop.

5. Put the nose of your round nosed pliers back into the loop, and use flat/bent nosed pliers to wrap the wire of the head pin around itself. This is one end of your lariat.

6. Cut a 2 inch piece of 24 gauge wire and file the ends smooth.

7. Measure down approximately ¾ to ½ of an inch, use round nosed pliers to bend the wire over into an L shape, and then use your fingers to curl the wire around the nose of your pliers to form a loop.

8. Slip the other end of the piece of chain onto this loop.

9. Put the nose of your round nosed pliers back into the loop, and use flat/bent nosed pliers to wrap the wire around itself.

10. Slip on 1 crystal, 1 pearl, and 1 crystal bead onto your wire.

11. Again use round nosed pliers to make a loop on the end of the wire.

12. Slip on another piece of chain through this loop, and wrap the wire around itself to close the loop around the chain.

13. Continue steps 6 - 12 above until you have 14 bead pieces and 14 chain pieces that are alternating.

14. Repeat steps 6 - 11 above, and set your partially finished necklace aside.

15. Now you need to make the hook. Though there are a number of hook designs in my Wire Findings sections - I chose to make a Wire Clover Clasp. Use 18 gauge wire to create the hook.

16. Then slip the hook onto the end of your last piece of chain.

Though you can use any chain you like, make sure that the wire used for the hook (mine was 18 gauge) will fit through the chain you decide to use. This will help you when you want to try to wear the necklace in a variety of styles. I have a few styles pictured below.

First, since the finished piece is approximately 40 inches long, you can easily double the necklace. I also like dangling a piece in the back.

The double lariat look is also popular and can be worn with this necklace. Just wrap it around your neck two times and leave two long pieces. Slip the hook through one of the chain links.

Another idea is to wear it as a very long lariat where you have it around your neck one time and attach the hook to a link. You could also wrap this around your wrist or anklet a bunch of times, and if you really want to look "hip," wear it as a belt.
