CD Earrings

Cut a CD to create an earring component

How many CDs for Internet companies do you get in your mail on a regular basis? If you’re like me, you get a lot. Typical pack rat that I am, I started collecting these with the idea of making something with them. I think the silver back of the CDs are very pretty, and many have cool designs on the front too. I’ve seen people make very nice Christmas ornaments out of them. But, of course, I decided to make some jewelry. These CD earrings are pretty basic, but I think a lot more could be done with them.

You’ll need:

1 CD
pencil
ruler
very, very sharp scissors (metal cutter work best)
files
E6000 glue
flat earring post & clutch back

1. First, using the ruler and pencil mark out your shape. A triangle is the easiest to cut because it requires only 2 lines to be cut.

2. Now you need to cut across the lines. If your scissors aren’t sharp enough, the CD will crack.

3. You should have a triangle, and you’ll notice the edges are kind of raw looking. Smooth them up a little using the files.

4. Now dab some glue on the back of the flat ear post and attach to the top, back of the triangle. Allow glue to dry.

Ta Da! There are endless possibilities here. You could also glue stuff - beads, found objects, wire - to the front of the CD, or make them into dangles by using a drill press or dremel to punch some holes in the top of each piece.
