D.D. Hess made these using basic lampworking techniques, but she put a spin on the regular "round" bead and stacked a smaller yellow bead on top of another bead as she worked on the torch. She then used a glass stringer (long, thin strings of glass) to add eyes, and a little dab of from a red rod of glass for the beak. For the tale, she added a little yellow glass to its bottom, and then used a tool to flatten it before it cooled.
You can purchase these beads directly from D.D. by emailing her through her web site, and for more Spring Time inspiration, take a look at some of my spring related holiday bead projects.
