How to Locate Local Jewelry Classes

My advice to beginning jewelry makers is always to start out by looking for a class. However, even experienced jewelry makers can learn a lot by taking classes. Believe it or not, there might be one near you.

Difficulty Level: Average    Time Required: 1-8 hours

1. Call your local high school for information on adult education classes. Many craft classes, such as jewelry, are often taught through adult ed.
2. Check with your local community college. They may either have classes in their art department or through a vocational department.
3. Look in your yellow pages for jewelry schools and bead shops. Most bead shops either offer classes or will show you what you need to get started.
4. Look for local rock and gem clubs. Lapidary Journal puts out a list in their May issue, and most clubs offer classes from members.
5. Surf the Education section (linked below under URLs) for links to lots of schools. Some even offer on-line classes.
6. Call the YMCA or any community centers in your area and ask for a list of craft classes.
7. Look in your newspaper for club and group activities. You might find a rock club or bead group near by.
   

Tips:

1. Find a buddy who has the same interest and split up some of the above steps to help save you time.
2. Call anyone you think might be able to help. If they don’t know, they might be able to suggest some one who can.
