I'm catching up on my book reviews again starting with Chic Metal: Modern Metal Jewelry to Make at Home by Victoria Tillotson. This book starts with simple fabrication techniques and builds on these as you work your way through 29 metal jewelry projects. Tillotson teaches metal jewelry making, so she has created a book based on her years of experience in the classroom. This book covers all the basics from sawing to soldering with an emphasis on important fabrication techniques necessary for anyone just starting out. In fact, you may be surprised at the large number of jewelry designs you can create with some of these basic techniques. Before you even think of picking up a torch, you can have a fairly large selection of jewelry using the beginning level project in her book. However, you'll want to read my full review of this new book before you head to the bookstore.

Thanks for the heads up and review on this. Something to bookmark for when I lose my fear of torches/flammable gas! More sophisticated metal working is next on my list–just learning to work with heavy gauge wire now and could definitely use some tips on that–I will check out her TOC on Amazon or something and see how much she talks about non-torch work.

A crazy way that I learned about jewellry making is through doing my own patinas. You can even patina your own silver with a boiled egg or hanging silver in the shower! We wrote an article about it on our website. It’s pretty funny. http://www.stonesandfindings.com/jewelry-making-articles/articles/creating-your-own-patina
