New Year's Resolutions for Jewelry Designers

Tuesday December 30, 2008
2009 is almost here, so it's time for some self-reflection. I know that not everyone is into making New Year's Resolutions, but even if you don't want to call them that, maybe goals or future objectives might be a good way to think about how you'd like to tackle your jewelry making in 2009. I think it is always a good thing to take some time to think about what you have been doing when it comes to your hobby, life, work, etc. and how you can improve your approach.

I've put together a poll below using some of my own ideas and also those collected from a similar post over at the forum. Thank you to all the forum members who contributed to helping me create the poll. I think many of us have a lot of the same objectives for 2009, but if not, feel free to include yours in the comments.

I’m going to try to actually take pictures and update my stores (etsy and my own site) on a regular basis. I haven’t added or updated in ages. Think I need to concentrate more on online sales and do less art/craft shows this year. Or at least increase my inventory enough so I can do justice to both online and in person sales.

I started my website, I have to get my shopping cart up. How do I get people to my site without paying for it?

I love thinking about this each year, but it is somewhat depressing when I realize that I’m in about the same place that I was last year! I’m going to move forward this coming year, I swear I am :-)

CyndiB - It is so hard to keep a store updated. I thought I’d have time over the break to update my etsy store, but so far, it hasn’t happened.

Linda - Check this blog post for some ideas: http://jewelrymaking.about.com/b/2008/04/02/jewelry-site-but-no-sales.htm

Cyndi - I bet you have accomplished more than you think.

Great idea Tammy!
My “other” resolutions are: to work on PR and selling and secondly=attend more jewelry functions and network more.

PR is good one to focus on Barbe.

(7) Martha says:

I have finally left my “real job” to work only on what I want, my jewelry. I have neglected my Etsy and Artfire shop and plan on making and listing more jewelry this year. PR and organizing are big on my list.

(8) Candy Schuller says:

This is the end of my first year of full time making jewelry. I joined etsy and never did anything about it so this year, I intend to take what I’ve made, learn to do it even better and get it into my etsy site. For me, this is the hardest part…going public with my work.

(9) Karen Zaorski says:

I accomplished quite a bit last year. Organized my studio, containerized my inventory, and set up JewelryArtByKaren.etsy. This year’s new years resolution is to inventory my supplies. Wish me luck and Happy 2009 to everyone. Karen Zaorski

(11) GBryant "serene" says:

Recently I came into some vintage/antique jewelry from family members who have passed on. I am taking inventory and going to get estimates. What I really want to do is remake jewelry using some of the parts. But if the piece is worth more than I can get by remaking, then I might sell.
