Examine Your Lampwork Beads

Wednesday October 8, 2008
Lampwork beads (such as the one pictured crafted by glass artist, DD Hess) are wonderful components to include in your jewelry designs, and there are some amazingly talented glass artists out there these days. Even if you don't make glass beads yourself, though, it can be very helpful to know what to look for when you decided to purchase them.

This is one reason I suggest learning about as many techniques as possible, even if you don't necessarily have the time or inclination to master them all. If nothing else, the knowledge will make you appreciate the work of someone else and help you determine if you are purchasing quality materials. On that note, I put together a short list of tips to think about when purchasing lampwork beads: Lampwork Bead Quality Tips.

I bought some lampwork beads at a bead show. By the time I got them home many were broken. It’s not that they were banged around, I was very careful because they were glass. They seem to just split into pieces. How can we tell by looking at the beads at a show whether they are good quality or not?
