Go for the Gold with Metal Clay

Thursday April 24, 2008
This past Christmas, my sweet husband bought me some gold metal clay along with some gold wire of various gauges and gold findings such as ear hooks. I can't tell you how actually not-thrilled I was at first. Of course, I didn't tell him that, but inside I was thinking, "What is he thinking? This stuff is too expensive for me to play around with! What if I goof up and it's all wasted!?"

So, it sat for awhile, and I played with lots of silver metal clay, which still isn't cheap these days but is much more in my comfort zone. Finally, after making a good deal of silver jewelry, I got the nerve up to open a 3 gram package of "the good stuff."

In my first gold metal clay project, Gold Metal Clay Star Earrings, you can see one of my first projects, and I dont think it turned out too badly either. In fact, these are so bright because they are 22kt gold, it's amazing when you see them in person.

I can't say I've gotten over my fear of gold. In fact, I still have a larger package of gold metal clay to open, but my comfort level has increased at least a little bit with it.
