Brass Beading Wire

Friday June 2, 2006
Fire Mountain Gems and Beads is announcing a new type of beading wire - Brass. Many jewelry makers are starting to discover other metals lately, not just sticking with the usual silver and gold-filled, so this is a nice addition. From a Fire Mountain press release:

Accu-Flex 100% brass wire, coated nylon is a great way to achieve an oustanding look at an unbelievable value. The wire is available in four different sizes (ultra lightweight cable .012", lightweight cable .014", mediumweight cable .019", and heavyweight cable .024"). The brass wire is priced starting at $2.05 for a 30 ft. spool.

This new wire is “sorta” nice. I like it for making jewelry with magnetic hematite, since it lets the beads slide, unlike the normal stainless steel that seems to fight the magnatism. Beware, though, that the brass wire plastic coating seems to be very fragile. I have frayed several strands of the wire, trying to get it back through a crimp or bead hole if it’s a little tight. I have found that the feed of the wire needs to be with one smooth movement of your pliers without stopping, instead of pulling/adjusting the wire as most of us do while working on that tie-off (ending) crimp.

I think that’s wonderful. I use them for my supplies when I have an event or season to prepare for in advance. When I dream of ideas, I head to the craft store the next day. lol.

Excellent, I’ve always wanted this, i work with brass when the local store runs out of silver, and it’s a decent combo with “golden” color beads, and at the cost, it will be a great “practice” wire for new design ideas!
